"Don't share your password" isn't a curriculum

Most online safety teaching still leans on messages written for a different internet: don't share passwords, don't talk to strangers, think before you post. All still true — and nowhere near enough. The students in front of you are dealing with AI-generated images, deepfakes, fake accounts, sextortion scams and manipulative influencer content, and those threats change faster than any scheme of work. A scam format can spread across TikTok in a weekend; a lesson written last year can already feel like history to a Year 10.

That pace problem is now baked into the statutory expectations. The DfE's updated RSHE guidance, published in July 2025 and compulsory from 1 September 2026, names today's risks explicitly — which means online safety lessons at KS3 and KS4 need to be current, specific and practical, not an annual assembly and a poster.

The requirements

What the 2026 RSHE guidance expects secondary schools to cover

The updated statutory guidance on Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and Health Education replaces the 2019 version. For the first time it names specific online harms that secondary pupils should be taught about:

Deepfakes and AI-generated images
How convincing synthetic photos and videos are made, why they're used, and how to think critically about what looks real.
Sextortion and coercion
The risks of sextortion and non-consensual image sharing — and that indecent images of anyone under 18 are a crime.
Fake accounts and impersonation
Fake profiles, impersonation tactics and online scams — the pressure, urgency and requests for money, logins or codes that give them away.
AI chatbots
What AI chatbots are, what they get wrong, and how to use them with judgement rather than blind trust.
Data, privacy and targeted ads
Commercial data sharing, targeted advertising and the digital footprint students are building whether they mean to or not.
Misogynistic online content
Recognising manipulative influencer content and online misogyny, and building the critical thinking to push back on it.
Where this sits in your curriculum
Online safety at secondary level is delivered mainly through two named RSHE strands — Online safety and awareness and Wellbeing online — alongside the online-safety outcomes in the Computing programmes of study for KS3 and KS4, and often tutor time. The DfE's separate Teaching online safety in schools guidance is non-statutory: it doesn't add new teaching requirements, but it does expect schools to vet any external resources they bring in — worth remembering whenever you evaluate a provider, including us. One notable change in the 2025 guidance: rigid age brackets are gone. Schools decide when topics land based on their own pupils' maturity — which makes deliberate sequencing across KS3 and KS4 your decision to make, and to justify.
Lesson design

What a good online safety lesson looks like

Whether you build your own lessons or buy them in, the same tests apply. Students switch off the moment content feels dated or preachy — and non-specialist staff need materials that don't assume a computing degree.

Current, not historical

Examples should look like what students saw on their phones this term — the scam formats, platforms and tactics circulating now, not the ones from five years ago.

Practice, not lecture

Students should make decisions — spot the fake profile, judge the message, choose a response — and see the consequences. Being told about a threat isn't the same as recognising one.

Teach the real tells

Good scam lessons teach the discriminators that hold up: pressure, urgency, a fee, a request for a login or code — and the habit of going direct to the official app or site rather than trusting how a link looks.

Deliverable by non-specialists

Most online safety teaching lands on form tutors and PSHE staff, not computing teachers. Every lesson needs objectives, discussion prompts and teacher notes — ready to teach, not just ready to assign.

Safe by design

Sensitive topics need content warnings and teacher framing — and activities shouldn't invite personal disclosures or ask students to comment on each other. Preview everything before you assign it.

Leaves evidence behind

You'll be asked what online safety teaching happened, who completed it and where the gaps are — by SLT, governors or a personal development review. Plan for that record from the start — our guide to evidencing online safety teaching covers how.
Sequencing

Sequencing across KS3 and KS4

With fixed age brackets gone from the guidance, the sequence is yours to design — but a flat pick-and-mix of activities isn't a curriculum. A workable shape: build the foundations and habits at KS3, then move to the higher-stakes, more adult territory at KS4 as students' online lives expand into money, relationships and independence.
